Electrical Inspection of Swimming Pools

Electrical Inspection of Swimming PoolsSwimming pools, paddling pools and their surroundings are locations of increased electric shock risk because of the reduction in body resistance and the increased contact between the body and Earth potential due to wet, bare skin.

Consequently, such locations are covered by Part 7 (Special installations or locations) of BS 7671, the applicable section being Section 702 (Swimming Pools).

Swimming Pools require annual electrical inspection under BS 7671:2008, with a Periodic Inspection Report issued on the condition of the electrical installation.

ESI: Electrical Safety Inspections Limited are able to provide specialist electrical inspection and testing of swimming pools and associated locations.

A short list of essential questions relating to your swimming pool are as follows:

  • Has the electrical installation been inspected by a NICEIC registered contractor within the last 3 years?
  • Do all socket outlets, etc, in wet or damp areas meet the correct standards?
  • Are all socket outlets protected by means of a residual current device (RCD)?
  • Are all RCD’s tested at least monthly
  • Are safe systems of work in place when portable electrical equipment is used on the pool side?
  • Are all portable electrical appliances inspected and tested at regular intervals by a competent person?
